Love Marriage
by VV Ganeshananthan
FICTION
When her dying uncle arrives in Toronto from Sri Lanka to spend his last days with his estranged family, Yalini puts her studies on hold to care for him. Her parents emigrated from their native Sri Lanka in their youth and the uncle’s presence soon stirs painful memories for them.
Becoming the family historian, Yalini, in evocative vignettes, depicts events in her ancestors’ past that are still relevant to her own life as a young modern woman. Focusing on ‘love marriage’, losses and tragedies, she draws an intimate portrait of a country torn apart from within and subtly hints at the stultifying pressure of traditional marriage.
A haunting debut written with great finesse, this is a beautiful novel.
