A Secret Alchemy
by Emma Darwin
FICTION
Una returns home, still mourning the untimely death of her husband, in order to start research on a project about the custodians of the famous Princes in the Tower. When she reaches London, however, she soon realises that a more pressing concern is the imminent sale of her family's printing business; she also has to resolve an old family mystery.
This story is just a framework, however, on which Emma Darwin hangs a detailed and fascinating historical novel, exploring the life of Elizabeth, wife of Edward IV, and the 'real' story behind what happened to their sons, those Princes who met their death in the Tower of London.
Darwin, it has to be said, is a little more successful with her historical characters than the contemporary ones, but this novel is still a real winner for any fans of Philippa Gregory, Alison Weir and their ilk.
