Pakistan, with its riven history and tangled classes, has rarely been caught so surely. These linked tales are set on and around a large, near-feudal farm, and tell of the mess of patronage, banditry and family that makes it tick. Mueenuddin is a fine stylist with a lively wit and graceful turn of phrase, which makes this a debut with dazzle and depth.
